Drafting & Developing Pattern for Ladies Suit

Drafting and developing patterns is a fundamental process in Sewing Technology. It involves creating a paper blueprint of a garment before cutting the actual fabric. In the case of a ladies suit, proper drafting ensures correct fitting, comfort, and professional finishing. A well-developed pattern helps in accurate cutting and reduces fabric wastage.

Introduction

A ladies suit generally consists of three main parts: Kurti (top), Salwar or bottom, and Dupatta. Among these, drafting is mainly required for the Kurti and Salwar. Pattern drafting is done based on body measurements and standard formulas. It acts as a guide for cutting fabric pieces in the correct shape and size.

Tools Required for Drafting

  • Measuring tape
  • Scale or ruler
  • L-square
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Pattern paper or chart paper
  • French curve

Body Measurements Required

Accurate body measurements are very important for drafting a ladies suit. The following measurements are commonly taken:

  • Bust
  • Waist
  • Hip
  • Shoulder width
  • Armhole depth
  • Sleeve length
  • Kurti length
  • Neck width and depth
  • Salwar length
  • Bottom width

Drafting of Kurti (Top)

Drafting of the Kurti is done step by step on pattern paper using body measurements.

Steps for Drafting Kurti

  • Draw a vertical line equal to the length of the Kurti
  • Mark chest line, waist line, and hip line
  • Mark shoulder width and neck width
  • Draw neckline shape as per design
  • Mark armhole depth and draw armhole curve
  • Shape the side seam according to body measurements
  • Add seam allowance around the pattern

Proper shaping of armhole and neckline is important for comfort and appearance. Seam allowance is generally added as extra fabric for stitching.

Drafting of Sleeve

Sleeve drafting is done separately and then attached to the armhole of the Kurti.

  • Draw a rectangle based on sleeve length and arm round
  • Mark sleeve cap height
  • Draw sleeve curve to match armhole
  • Mark bottom width of sleeve

Correct sleeve drafting ensures easy movement of the arm and proper fitting.

Drafting of Salwar

Salwar drafting is simpler compared to Kurti drafting. It mainly depends on hip measurement and desired looseness.

  • Take fabric length for salwar
  • Mark waist and hip measurements
  • Provide extra ease for comfort
  • Mark crotch depth properly
  • Shape bottom portion according to style

Elastic or drawstring is usually used at the waist for fitting.

Pattern Development

Pattern development is the process of modifying the basic draft into different styles. Design variations can be created by changing neckline, sleeve style, length, or adding decorative elements.

  • Changing neckline shapes (round, V-shape, square)
  • Adding pleats or gathers
  • Altering sleeve styles (short, long, puff)
  • Changing length (short Kurti, long Kurti)
  • Adding panels or flares

Pattern development helps in creating fashionable and modern garments as per trends.

Importance of Drafting

  • Ensures accurate fitting
  • Reduces fabric wastage
  • Saves time during cutting
  • Helps in mass production
  • Improves garment quality

Precautions

  • Take accurate body measurements
  • Use proper tools for drafting
  • Maintain straight lines and curves
  • Add proper seam allowance
  • Check pattern before cutting fabric

Applications

Drafting and pattern development are widely used in tailoring, boutique work, and garment industries. It is essential for making customized clothes as well as ready-made garments.

Conclusion

Drafting and developing pattern for a ladies suit is an essential skill in Sewing Technology. It ensures proper fitting, comfort, and attractive appearance of garments. With practice and accuracy, one can create different styles and designs easily. Proper knowledge of drafting techniques is important for both beginners and professionals in the garment field.
