Mending

Mending is the process of repairing damaged or worn-out garments to make them usable again. It helps in increasing the life of clothes and maintaining their appearance. Common methods of mending include darning and patching.

1. Darning

Darning is a method of repairing small holes or worn areas in fabric by weaving thread over the damaged area. It is commonly used for socks, sweaters, and light fabrics.

Steps of Darning

  • Clean and prepare the damaged area
  • Place the fabric on a flat surface or darning support
  • Use matching thread or yarn
  • Make parallel stitches across the hole
  • Weave threads in opposite direction to form a mesh
  • Secure the ends with knots

Uses of Darning

  • Repair small holes and tears
  • Strengthen weak fabric areas
  • Extend life of garments

2. Patching

Patching is a method of repairing large holes or damaged areas by placing a piece of fabric over or under the damaged part. It is suitable for heavy damage and thicker fabrics.

Types of Patching

  • Visible patch
  • Invisible patch

Steps of Patching

  • Cut the damaged portion neatly
  • Select a matching patch fabric
  • Place the patch over or under the damaged area
  • Fold edges neatly
  • Stitch the patch securely using even stitches

Uses of Patching

  • Repair large holes
  • Strengthen damaged areas
  • Restore garment usability

Conclusion

Mending techniques like darning and patching are essential in sewing technology. They help in repairing garments, saving cost, and increasing durability. Proper mending improves both the appearance and life of clothing.
