Types of Figures & Body Measurements

Book: Human Figures

Introduction

Understanding different types of human figures and body measurements is very important in sewing technology and fashion designing. It helps in creating well-fitted garments that suit different body shapes and sizes. Proper knowledge of body structure improves accuracy in drafting and pattern making.

Types of Figures

Human figures can be classified into different types based on body shape and proportion. Each figure type requires special attention while designing garments.

1. Normal Figure

A normal figure has balanced body proportions. The measurements of bust, waist, and hips are in proper ratio. Most standard patterns are based on this figure type.

2. Slim Figure

A slim figure has less body fat and narrow measurements. Garments for slim figures often include gathers, frills, and layers to add volume.

3. Heavy Figure

A heavy figure has more body weight and broader measurements. Loose-fitting garments and proper shaping are required to provide comfort and good appearance.

4. Tall Figure

A tall figure has greater height than average. Garments should be designed to maintain proper balance and proportion.

5. Short Figure

A short figure has less height. Vertical designs and proper length selection help in creating an attractive look.

6. Hourglass Figure

In this figure type, bust and hips are nearly equal with a well-defined waist. It is considered ideal for many garment styles.

7. Pear Shape Figure

In pear-shaped figures, hips are wider than shoulders. Garments should balance the upper and lower body.

8. Apple Shape Figure

In apple-shaped figures, the upper body is broader than the lower body. Proper design helps in creating a balanced appearance.

Body Measurements

Body measurements are necessary for drafting patterns and constructing garments. Accurate measurements ensure proper fitting and comfort.

Important Body Measurements

  • Bust: Measurement around the fullest part of the chest
  • Waist: Measurement around the natural waistline
  • Hip: Measurement around the fullest part of the hips
  • Shoulder Width: Distance between both shoulders
  • Neck: Measurement around the base of the neck
  • Armhole Depth: Depth of armhole for sleeve fitting
  • Sleeve Length: Length from shoulder to wrist
  • Garment Length: Total length of the garment

Methods of Taking Measurements

  • Use a flexible measuring tape
  • Keep the tape snug but not tight
  • Stand in a natural position
  • Take measurements over proper clothing
  • Record measurements accurately

Importance in Sewing Technology

  • Helps in proper pattern drafting
  • Ensures correct fitting of garments
  • Reduces alteration work
  • Improves garment quality
  • Enhances customer satisfaction

Precautions

  • Avoid loose or tight measurement
  • Double-check all measurements
  • Use standard measuring techniques
  • Maintain correct posture during measurement

Conclusion

Knowledge of types of figures and body measurements is essential for sewing and garment construction. It helps in designing comfortable, well-fitted, and attractive garments. Proper understanding of body shapes and accurate measurement techniques improves the overall quality of clothing.
